MEAN STREETS

Director: Martin Scorsese
Cast: Harvey Keitel, Robert DeNiro, David Proval, Richard Romanus
Certificate: 15
Release Date: 21st January 2005

The first real book in the cinematic Gospel According to St. Marty finds him already stooped at the twin altars of crime and church, sin and redemption. Keitel’s anguished Charlie and DeNiro’s cocky Johnny Boy get in way over their heads in the back alleys and bars of Little Italy, their small-time hustling given grandeur by raw, inventive filmmaking (strapping the camera to Keitel for a drunk scene) and a choir of vintage Motown and Rolling Stones. Shot for scraps, if later Scorsese / DeNiro efforts would scale greater heights, the thrill of seeing how it all started is undiminished.
